Dr. Matt Zerebny and Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, HR 5060 was written in the memories of Palm Springs Police Officers Lesley Zerebny and Gilbert Vega to benefit all first responder families who suffer the loss of their fallen loved one.

  • Increase the death and disability benefit

  • Revise the date of determination for the amount of the death and disability benefit

  • Increase the monthly education assistance benefit and otherwise revise the computation method for such benefit

The bill, HR 5060, changes the benefits under the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) program. The program provides disability, education, and death benefits to public safety officers and the survivors of public safety officers who are permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty.

HR 5060 directs the Government Accountability Office to examine and identify ways to improve access to benefits and the processing of claims under the program.
